Google ditches china? hope so.

It didn't sit right with me that Google was working so hard to cater to the communist rules of China just so they could have a presence there. I'm happy to hear they are considering taking a stand and walking out of China after their efforts have inspired some scary political and human rights issues.

http://googleblog.blogspot.com/2010/01/new-approach-to-china.html

In simple terms, *someone* has been accessing the gmail accounts of human rights activists both in China and in other countries. I'm going to take a huge leap here - and we know how I love conspiracy theories - that the Chinese government are using Google to spy on individuals who are trying to defend the rights of the slaves employed to run Chinese factories. (yes, the factories that make the stuff we buy EVERY DAY)

Take a stand Google. Prove to me you are truly interested in making a better world, not just your bottom line. Pretty please?

I'm Ariel's Sister ...

You're Arista!
You're the direct anti-thesis of Ariel, and don't
hesitate in making that clear every chance you
get. You're bursting with confidence, which
enhances your direct outspokenness, a trait
that causes both admiration and fear in others.

Which of Ariel's sisters are you?

Facebook Fan Badge

The code to make this little facebook snippet is so incredibly long ... but it is an example of yet another effective way Facebook are marketing themselves through badging other people's sites. I could physically make my own add for BCR's facebook group and post it on a website, but this took 3 minutes as opposed to 15.

It's great that things are getting easier, but its kinda frustrating how much easier things are now ... in particular when young developers think they are genius because they can link 2 applications together, which were written in the first place by someone who they now have no respect for.

Work whinge aside, if you want to check out what I've been doing in my spare time lately to keep fit and have a bit of stress relief, click the facebook fan badge for Brisbane City Rollers - that's right, ROLLER DERBY IS BACK!

Roller Derby is Totally Awesome Dude!

You may have heard of Roller Derby, or remember it from the 70's, but if not here's 10 minutes from a game on the 22nd August that shows you a pretty good preview of how totally awesome it is!

I recently started learning about Roller Derby and have been joining the BCR league occasionally for training... check out fresh meat days at their website, here: http://www.brisbanecityrollers.com

Good guy Depp plays bad boy Dillinger

Johnny Depp is public enemy number 1, John Dillinger, bringing charm and obnoxious confidence to the real life story of the 1930's bank robber.

Public Enemies (Michael Mann 2009) is based on part of the book Public Enemies: America's Greatest Crime Wave and the Birth of the FBI by Bryan Burrough, an evolutionary story of crime and crime fighting in the 1930's.

Set in Chicago this historical drama focuses on the crime sprees of John Dillinger, Baby Face Nelson and Pretty Boy Floyd. The classic cinematography blurs the lines between good guys and bad as we grow to love Depp's character and despise the police. The American hero cop Melvin Purvis (Christian Bale) is the good guy who breaks his own rules, fumbling to chase Dillinger and his friends across state lines and highlighting the lack of shared intelligence across state lines.

I was left craving knowledge of this real life criminal who hid openly among society and escaped the law for so long. It's an interesting story told with the Miami Vice style of director Michael Mann, and beautifully concluded . The numbers say audiences agree - 6 weeks after its USA launch Universal Pictures have made $160 million from a $100 million investment.

Ladies will love the variety of leading men while the guys will envy the Chicago gangsters, their money and the company of beautiful women. Public Enemies is equally suited to a date night out or a girls night in, but get comfortable - it's 140 minutes long.

Watch for: An appearance by Australian actor David Wenham
Best Bit: Great casting, performances and an interesting story
Worst Bit: The length, 140 minutes
Interesting Fact: Robert DeNiro is the Executive Producer
See It: At home so you can take a break
Rated: M15+
The obligatory and dramatic Hollywood love story takes place between the irresistible Dillinger and Billie Frechette who was played by Oscar winning French actress, Marion Cotillard.
